چکیده

We discuss a multi-scale geometrical representation of (seismic) waves via a decomposition into wave packets. Wave packets can be thought of as certain localized “fat” plane waves. As a starting point we take the frame of continuous “curvelets” and associated transform. Different discretizations, and approximations, of this transform lead to different discrete wave packets. One such discretization leads to the introduction of digital curvelets. Here, we follow a different discretization while constructing discrete almost symmetric wave packets and making use of the USFFT. The resulting discrete transform is unitary. In our discretization, we directly approximate the underlying dyadic parabolic decomposition, its (rotational) symmetry, and approximate all the necessary decay estimates for continuous “curvelets” in phase space with arbitrary accuracy. Another relevant aspect of our discretization is the appearance of parameters that control the tiling of phase space corresponding with the dyadic parabolic decomposition, preserving the relative parabolic scaling, while adapting to the physical problem at hand. We consider applications in exploration seismology and global seismology. For these, we need transforms in higher dimensions, that is, in dimension n = 3, 4, 5.

Migration Velocity Analysis Using Wave Packets - Geometric Approach

Current algorithms for imaging seismic reflection data can be subdivided into two classes: Kirchhoff (generalized Radon transform) and wave-equation (double-square-root and reverse-time) migration. Kirchhoff type methods rely on asymptotic and ray-geometrical considerations. Wave-equation imaging algorithms (one-way or twoway) appear to be more robust in the case of complicated velocity models ...

In this paper, the reflection of ultrasonic guided waves from simple dent in pipes has been investigated using finite element method and the relationship between reflection coefficient of these waves and deformation rate has been determined. Also, the effect of the parameters of wave generation source on the generated wave field has been investigated using normal modes expansion method. At firs...

Multiscale Discrete Approximation of Fourier Integral Operators

Abstract. We develop a discretization and computational procedures for the approximation of the action of Fourier integral operators whose canonical relations are graphs. Such operators appear in many physical contexts and computational problems, for instance in the formulation of imaging and inverse scattering of seismic reflection data. Our discretization and algorithms are based on a multi-s...

Body-wave interferometry using local earthquakes with multi-dimensional deconvolution and wave- field decomposition at free surface

We retrieve reflected plane waves by applying seismic interferometry to the recorded ground motion from a cluster of earthquakes. We employ upgoing/downgoing P/S wavefield decomposition, time windows, time reversal, and multi-dimensional deconvolution (MDD) to improve the quality of the extraction of reflected waves with seismic interferometry. Because MDD interferometry requires the separation...
